What Does A Neuroma Feel Like?
A neuroma, also referred to as a pinched nerve, is a benign but often painful growth of nerve tissue between the toes. Pressure, irritation, or trauma can irritate the nerves located in the ball of your foot. This can cause the nerve tissue to thicken and make standing or walking painful. The tell-tale sign of a neuroma is pain between the toes when walking, but some of the other symptoms may include:
- Pain in the forefoot.
- Numbness and tingling centered in the ball of the foot.
- Radiating pain and swelling between your toes.
- A sensation of stepping on a small marble or pebble.
Neuroma pain generally worsens with activity. Wearing tight shoes, high heels, or participating in repetitive movements can increase your risk of developing a neuroma.
Treating Neuromas
Neuromas can be uncomfortable and hinder your mobility. Fortunately, several treatment measures can help your symptoms. Here are some of the ways we can treat neuromas at Cherrywood Foot Care:
- Anti-Inflammatory Medication – Our team may recommend medication to help minimize inflammation in the irritated nerves. Corticosteroid injections can also help treat neuromas.
- Custom Orthotics – Our team may recommend custom orthotics to help relieve your neuroma pain and take pressure off of sensitive nerves.
- Supportive Footwear – Narrow shoes or high heels can worsen your neuroma, so choosing supportive, flat footwear may reduce your symptoms.
- Surgery – If more conservative measures fail to provide relief, neuroma surgery may be necessary. This procedure can involve releasing tissues around the nerve or removing a small portion of the nerve bundle.
