So, below are “Five Foot Tips” to help you maintain your healthy feet while hitting the pavement this winter, along with along with a short list of some of the upcoming winter runs taking place across Long Island throughout the month of January!
Five Foot Tips For Runners
• Proper Footwear Is Essential – Selecting the proper shoes for running, jogging and walking is priority number one and essential to ensure you do not harm your feet. Choose shoes that fit snugly, but are not too tight. Those containing cushioning, rubber soles and/or orthotics can help alleviate soreness and balance the foot.
• Stretch – Stretching your hamstrings, calves, quads—and yes, feet—will help prepare your body for strenuous activity and help to prevent running-related injuries. Stretch before and after you run.
• Don’t Wear Old Shoes – If your sneakers are worn out then even a casual job may be enough to injure your feet.
• Trim Your Toenails – Make sure your toenails have been properly trimmed prior to the big race. Not doing so may lead to painful ingrown toenails or possibly even a fungal nail. Yikes!
• Proper Socks – It may sound like common sense, but wearing properly fitting socks can go a long way toward helping you reach the finish line, both figuratively and literally. Improperly fitting socks can cause blisters, excessive sweating and poor blood flow. This can lead to a host of foot issues, including bacteria and fungus growth and foul foot odor [Learn How To Combat Smelly Feet Here]. Select those that are lightweight, breathable, and snug, but not too tight.
