Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure done on the ankle or foot joints. Most conditions treated with an arthroscopy surgery are joint inflammation, torn ligaments, torn cartilage, or loose bone fragments. It is most commonly known because it is used frequently to treat professional athletes because of its quick recovery time. This procedure is performed by inserting small narrow tube with a camera through an incision, allowing the surgeon to the infected area without making a large incision. The incisions is small enough to be closed with one or two stitches, because the incision is so small the risk of swelling and infection is greatly reduced. The surgery will usually take between 30 minutes and two hours.
As in any surgical procedure, some preparations should be made prior to the surgery. Depending on the joint and the severity your doctor may want you to avoid certain foods prior. Also choose clothing that is loose fitting and comfortable.
After the procedure has been completed you will be taken into a recovery room for a few hours and be released. As for aftercare, pain medication will be subscribed and a temporary splint or crutches will need to be used for extra protection. The doctor might also suggest physical therapy depending on the severity of the injury to improve and rehabilitate function in your joint.
Arthroscopy is a light, minimally invasive procedure and you should be able to resume to light activity within a week and more strenuous activities within four weeks. Your doctor will monitor your progress in follow-up visits and address any problems
