27 Oct Curing Foot Fungus with Laser Treatment
Onychomycosis, the medical term for nail fungus, usually occurs on the foot. It is characterized by the nail becoming thickened and discolored: green, white, black, or yellow. Nails infected by onychomycosis often appear crumbly and brittle with some pieces breaking away from the toe or finger completely. While there is no physical pain or suffering associated with toenail fungus, many who are infected are self-conscious about the appearance of it. However, if the infection is left untreated for a long period of time, the toenails can become so thick that they press against the inside of shoes, causing pressure, pain, and irritation.
Treatments for onychomycosis are extremely sought after as most people infected are very unhappy with the appearance of their toenails. Topical drug therapies are an option but they often take longer than people would like. Recently, laser therapies have been introduced as a treatment for onychomycosis, offering a rapid treatment for an often persistent nail condition.
Laser treatment kills the pathogens causing nail fungus. The laser treatment is very new to the footcare world and only takes about 20 to 30 minutes. The laser is a patented device utilizing a very tight spectrum of near-infrared light, passing through the toenail without causing damage to the nail or surrounding skin. The laser applies a cool cryogen spray at optimum temperature, and because other lasers do not have this ability, results are not as consistent.
Although the treatment is new, many of our patients have seen good results from laser therapy. There are no adverse reactions, disabilities, injuries, or side effects associated with the treatment, and is a major selling point to people looking to treat onychomycosis, as oral medications used in the past were linked to liver, kidney, and eye problems.
