Beach Safety for you Feet

Beach season is just around the corner and taking care of your feet is just as important as taking care of the rest of your body. Following just a few steps can help you with your foot care and protect your feet, avoid sunburn, and wounds. Even though your feet are the lowest part of your body from the sun, they still need protection.

The skin on your feet is highly susceptible to melanoma and other forms of cancer, so it is important to apply sunscreen on the tops and bottoms of your feet. Guarding your feet from burns is important too. Even though the feeling of having your toes in the sand is a big part of the beach experience, sand can cause severe burns if the right precautions are not taken. Sand, sidewalks, and the pavement at the beach can get very hot during the summer months. Make sure to wear shoes to protect the soles of your feet from getting burned.

Everyone knows how soft sand is, but are they aware of the damage it can cause? Walking, jogging or playing sports on soft sand can cause arch pain, heel pain, ankle sprains, and other injuries. Make sure that when participating in physical activity on the sand, that you are wearing appropriate athletic shoes that provide heel cushioning and arch support.

Sea shells, broken glass, barnacles, mussel and clam shells, and other sharp objects can also interfere with the safeness of your feet at the beach. It is important that when going into the water, you wear shoes to protect your feet from punctures or cuts. If your skin does get cut, avoid going into the water because oceans can cause infections in open wounds.

If you are someone that’s living with diabetes, you need to take extra precautions with your feet while spending time at the beach. This disease causes poor blood circulation and numbness in the feet, so someone with diabetes may not feel the pain from a cut, puncture wound, or burn. To prevent any type of injury to the foot, it is important for anyone living with diabetes to always wear shoes at the beach and regularly check for objects like shells, or hot sand that could potentially cause burns, sores, infections, or ulcers.
