American Heart Month: How to be Heart Healthy

February is the month that has become all about love and hearts. Being that February is also American Heart Month, it is wise to be educated on your heart health to ensure not only a healthy month, but a healthy life as well!

With heart disease being a huge issue among women and men alike, it is important to make conscious decisions to improve or maintain your heart health. If you or someone you know has a hard time maintaining a healthy lifestyle, this month can be the gateway to success! Focusing on improving your heart health for American Heart Month will make it easier to transition into having a healthier lifestyle overall. In order to start your healthy heart journey, there are a few tips to follow.

The first thing to remember when trying to achieve a healthier heart is to exercise more.  Keeping your heart rate up for thirty minutes a day for five days a week with activities such as running or biking will help with creating and maintaining a healthier heart. If you are not currently active at all, make sure to consult your doctor before engaging in any strenuous activity.

If you do workout a few days a week, but are stagnant for most of your day, you are still at risk for heart disease. Continue moving throughout your day and include breaks to get your blood flowing.

Your diet is also important in keeping a healthy heart. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, lean meat, and fish should be included into your diet to improve heart health.

Finally, it is important to learn how to relax instead of stressing out and to get enough sleep each night. Stress can come from lack of sleep which is why it is important to de-stress so you can get your beauty rest!

Keep track of your heart health this month and to follow these tips in order to improve your lifestyle!
