Good Tips for Spring Foot Care

Are your feet prepared to finally be sprung from your fuzzy winter boots? It’s almost spring, which means weekend gatherings with the family, outdoor celebrations, and sandal season! While things, like getting pedicures or painting your toenails, cover the more aesthetic side of foot care, there are several other foot care tips that can keep your feet clean, healthy, strong and infection-free.

How to Prevent Bacterial or Fungal Infection

Here are some DO’s and DON’T’s to help prevent infection:

  • DON’T share nail clippers or files with others, especially if they have an infection themselves.
  • DON’T walk barefoot or get your feet wet in public places where bacteria and fungus may be spread.
  • DO wash and dry feet thoroughly, especially between the toes. This area is also prone to harboring infection.
  • DO keep your socks, shoes, and/or sandals clean and dry.
  • DO keep your toenails trimmed. Having excessively long toenails can harbor bacteria and fungus underneath the nails. Keeping your nails trimmed properly will also help in preventing the dreaded ingrown toenail.

Because your feet are always touching the ground, whether bare or through socks and shoes, they are more prone to infection. Keeping them squeaky clean and avoiding walking barefoot in public spaces are great ways to keep your feet infection-free!

How to Prevent Foot Pain and Injuries

Preventing injuries can be difficult, mainly because injuries aren’t exactly planned. One moment you can be running around with your kids in the warm spring sunshine, the next you have a sprained ankle. While it’s impossible to fully prevent, there are some DO’s and DON’T’s that can help you do the most you can to keep your feet from getting hurt.

  • DON’T walk, or especially run, on uneven surfaces where you may misstep and hurt yourself.
  • DO choose comfortable and well-fitting shoes. Shoes that don’t fit right put you at risk for not only discomfort, but for ingrown toenails, corns, and bunions.
  • DO stretch your feet out in the mornings and before extreme physical activity so your muscles are warmed up.
  • DO maintain a healthy weight to keep excess pressure off the feet.
  • DO rest your feet when they are in pain or uncomfortable. Some minor discomfort after a lot of exercise can be normal, but it’s best to keep the feet at rest in between activities.
